He informed me\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1007 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chol1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chol1.jpg 1190w, https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chol1-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chol1-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chol1-1024x661.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/chol1-624x403.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/>(as he stared at my bacon cheeseburger) that October has been designated as National Cholesterol Awareness Month and that maybe I should stop by his office where they&#8217;re doing free cholesterol screenings as part of the cholesterol awareness program. I told him that I would \u201ctry to come by\u201d, as he grabbed some packing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-storage-inn.com\/budget-storage-supplies\/\">tape and boxes<\/a>, and headed for his car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good cholesterol, bad cholesterol? What exactly is cholesterol, and how much is too much?<\/strong>\u00a0I swung by Dr. Ron&#8217;s office on my way home, and picked up a pamphlet on preventing high cholesterol.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here are some interesting tidbits about cholesterol&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance<\/strong> found in all your cells. It can tell you about your future heart health. High cholesterol doubles your risk for heart disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A blood test<\/strong> will tell you what your levels of total cholesterol, bad cholesterol, good cholesterol, and triglycerides are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About 74 million U.S. adults<\/strong> have high cholesterol. Less than half of them are getting treatment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can\u2019t live without cholesterol.<\/strong> We\u2019re born with cholesterol in our bodies. Infants get added cholesterol from their mother\u2019s milk. Cholesterol is even added to baby formula.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One out of every three adults has high cholesterol.<\/strong> Everyone over age 20 should get their cholesterol checked every five years. About about 75 percent of people actually do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High cholesterol can be genetic.<\/strong> Current research says the main influencing factor for high cholesterol is your genes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children can have high cholesterol \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Especially kids with obesity or a family history of heart attacks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sweating can raise your good cholesterol levels.<\/strong> You can raise your good cholesterol levels, which protect against heart disease, by working out. The key is to use interval training by exercising at a medium-intensity, sprinkling in periods of high-intensity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supplements may work to lower cholesterol.<\/strong> Supplements need to be taken daily and they don\u2019t work overnight. Diet and exercise should always be your first options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cholesterol-lowering medications work quickly.<\/strong> You can take a cholesterol-lowering pill today, and your levels may be down by 3 to 4 percent tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it &#8211; A combination of diet, exercise, and possibly medication, can keep your cholesterol in check. As for me, I am cutting back on the bacon cheeseburgers and trying to get more exercise.
