There are plenty of reasons why people decide it’s time to downsize their lives and move into a smaller living space including wanting less house to manage, retiring to a active adult community, health concerns, or the need for assisted living. Whatever the reason, downsizing can be a daunting task, but the The Storage Inn Self-Storage in Egg Harbor Township, and Ocean City, NJ can be a huge benefit for you in making that transition easier especially if you’re one of the following:

Empty Nesters
The kids have moved out! You can finally turn their bedroom into that office you always wanted, the dream craft room, or a guest bedroom. The possibilities are endless! So, what are you to do with all that extra stuff taking up extra space they left behind – bed, desk, dresser, etc.?

It can also ease the transition for you and your adult kids when they move out. Place their items into a storage unit and give them access to it. Retirees
Congratulations on your retirement! We all dream of that day when we can sleep in with no alarm and do all those things we’ve dreamt of for years, like traveling the world, or finding new hobbies.

If retirement means moving to a smaller home perhaps in a 55 and over community, the good news is no more shoveling snow or cutting the grass!  The challenge is that you now have less than half of the storage space that you had in your old home!

Where are you going to put the 30 years of stuff you’ve accumulated but can’t bear to get rid of yet?
This is where a self storage space can come to the rescue! The staff at The Storage Inn is always happy to offer tips to help you sort and save the items that may have sentimental value to your family as well as the ones that you made need easy access to throughout the year.

Assisted Living

How do you deal with a lifetime of personal belongings that very likely will not fit into your new senior living community? Often, time is of the essence, and the need for storing these items must be met quickly! This is where self-storage comes to the rescue! Many times, the best solution is to rent a large to mid-sized storage space until items can be sorted and consolidated into a smaller storage unit for long term storage.

LIttle League Baseball History

The Storage Inn talks with a youth sports storage rental customer about the origins of Little League Baseball.

Little League Baseball Storage and The Story of Carl Stotz

So winter is over, and nothing says Spring quite like the crack of a baseball bat, or the sound of a ball hitting a glove! Here at The Storage Inn self storage in Egg Harbor Township New Jersey, we get a visit every spring by our local Little League team to retrieve their baseball gear from the two storage units they rent. Coach Friedman stopped into the storage rental office to say hello, and we got to talking about the origin of little league baseball.

”I know the story of Abner Doubleday, and his inventing the game of baseball, but do know how little league baseball came about?” I asked coach Friedman. “Just so happens that I have a pamphlet in my truck that we hand out to the parents of our kids when they sign up for Little League – I’ll grab you one” said the coach.  I read up on the subject between storage rentals and here is what I learned about the history of little league baseball.

Carl E. Stotz, was a Williamsport Pennsylvania lumberyard clerk who came up with the idea for Little League baseball when he stumbled over a lilac bush during a backyard game of catch with his two young nephews in 1938.
Mr. Stotz, a lifelong Williamsport resident who later served as tax collector there, never tired of describing the summertime mishap that launched the vast Little League game now played by more than 2.5 million youngsters in more than 30 countries. As he frequently recalled, “I banged my leg against a bush, and while I sat on the back steps letting the pain subside, I asked my nephews… How would you like to play on a regular team with uniforms, your own cap, a new ball for every game and bats your size?!”

A few weeks later he crammed most of the neighborhood into his 1934 Plymouth and set out in search of the perfect field. By the end of the summer he had devised the stripped-down, boys’-sized dimensions at the core of Little League’s eventual spectacular success: 60 feet between the bases (two-thirds of the major league distance) and 46 feet from the pitcher’s mound to home plate (instead of 60 feet 6 inches).

By the next summer, Mr. Stotz had recruited sponsors for three teams, and on June 6, 1939, on a field he laid out himself, Lundy Lumber beat Lycoming Dairy, 23-8, and Little League baseball was born.

The league expanded and quickly spread across the country. There was a Pennsylvania state tournament in 1947, and two years later a national championship when the first Little League World Series was held.

Carl Stotz even established his own museum in a converted toolshed behind his house. In a place of honor among the other original Little League memorabilia he installed a glass case containing the very lilac bush that gave the game its start.

To this day, The Little League World Series is played in Williamsport Pennsylvania, drawing thousands of visitors to the tiny Mountain town.

So dust off your gloves, grab your bat and ball, and let’s head out to the field for some baseball. I’ll have to be very careful as I prepare to leave The Storage Inn rental office for the baseball field. We have quite a few lilac bushes around here – Play Ball!

Mr. Nick in his moving truck

Mr. Nick in his moving truck

Mr. Nick is one busy storage unit renter

So, it’s December here at The Storage Inn in Egg Harbor Township New Jersey – Almost time for my annual visit from one of our biggest customers, Mr. Nick. Mr. Nick’s been a storage unit tenant with us for as long as anyone can remember. He’s an unusual guy – older – the outdoorsy type – from up North somewhere. You know, big bushy beard, wears a lot of red flannel shirts with suspenders. That sort of thing.

Mr. Nick has seven of our extra large storage spaces with the extra high ceilings. He stops in every year around this time to let us know that even though he’ll be emptying out the storage units, he’s not moving out.

feature_christmas-elf-featMr. Nick is certainly a bit on the eccentric side and I’m assuming pretty wealthy since he’s mentioned renting storage units like ours all over the world. Each year right around Christmas time, his crew pulls in with a couple of giant, red S.C. Moving and Storage vans, and empties out out all seven of his storage spaces. The funny thing is, beginning in January, I’ll see his helpers back again and on a monthly basis, refilling the storage units with electronics, toys, sporting goods, and all sorts of goodies.

This year I decided to have a little chat with his crew. Nice guys – unusually short, but very well mannered and hard workers too. They all refer to Mr. Nick as “The big guy” which is quite true in height and around the waist line.

While his helpers were in the yard the other day,  I decided to be a little nosey.

“Excuse me guys. Just curious. What type of business is Mr. Nick in if you don’t mind me asking?” I questioned.

“Import/export” replied one of his of helpers.

“Oh, so he buys and then resells things” I asked.

“No, no – He gives it all away!” answered a particularly short man, who appeared to be the leader of the crew.

“Wow, really? That’s great – a wealthy philanthropist!” I gushed.

“I guess you could say that, but the big guy really doesn’t care about money – He just likes to make people happy!” came a high pitched voice from behind a pile of toys.

If that don’t beat all I thought to myself. I tipped my Storage Inn hat and wished Mr. Nick’s crew a good day and Happy Holidays. I walked back to the rental office thinking about my conversation with Mr. Nick’s helpers. Hmmmm, I thought – Puzzling. A guy from up North, with a bushy white beard, dressed in all red, with an import/ export charitable organization?… who collects toys and other goodies throughout the year, only to give them away at Christmas time? If I didn’t know any better I would guess he’s… omg…. I think I know what the “S. C.” in  S. C. Moving and Storage stands for!  Happy Holidays from The Storage Inn!

Tips for storing your summertime beach gear

Tips for storing your summertime beach gear!

How to Store your Summer!

Well, the Summer seemed to fly by here at The Storage Inn, located at the Jersey Shore, and now it’s Fall! The temperatures are dropping, and it’s time to start thinking about stowing your summer gear for the season. Let’s see… we have beach chairs in the trunks of two cars, a patio full of furniture, an assortment of bicycles, kayaks and canoes, and closets full of summer clothes. It may be time to consider getting some extra space at a self storage unit facility like our Ocean City self storage location or Egg Harbor Township self storage location! – Here are some tips to help you store your summer fun items!

Storing and Packing Beach Items

Shake off the loose sand, and make sure that your items are completely dry before storing them. It is also a good idea to place a moisture inhibitor such as Damp Rid in the storage unit to help avoid mold and mildew. Be sure to allow enough room for air to circulate around items such as beach chairs to prevent them from getting musty. Most importantly, DO NOT place anything into a storage unit that is still wet!

Storing and Packing Wheels and Paddles

Be sure to prep your bicycles, canoes and kayaks before placing them into storage. Oil any moving parts, and use the appropriate protectants on the metal, rubber, and plastic areas as needed prior to storing. You should also cover your stored items to protect your prep handywork!

Storing and Packing Patio Items

Make sure that all your patio furniture, grills, cushions, etc., are clean and dry prior to placing them into your self storage unit. Use patio furniture covers to protect your chairs and tables, and sealable plastic bags, or plastic wrap for your furniture cushions. Table cloths, placemats and accessories can be easily stored in an airtight plastic bin. Make sure that your grill is clean and dry, and that the fuel tank has been removed, prior to placing it into your self storage unit. Fuel tanks should always be stored in a secured outdoor area.

Storing and Packing Shorts, Tanks, & Tees

Be sure that all your clothing is clean and dry prior to storage. Use airtight plastic containers that are labeled on the side, so that you can read them when they’re stacked on top of one another. Placing silica packets inside of these containers will help to eliminate any moisture that might be trapped at the time of packing. Try placing a dryer sheet inside each of the containers to leave your clothing smelling clean and fresh when you retrieve them next spring.

Well, there you have it, the perfect plan for storing your Summer away from the self storage experts at The Storage Inn… at least until the temps begin to creep back up come Springtime!

To reserve the perfect unit to store your summer be sure to call or stop into your local self-storage facility, The Storage Inn! Our friendly staff is always available to answer any questions that you may have.

Self-Storage and Small Business

More Small Business’ using Self-Storage

When we think of self storage, most people think of long rows of metal doors that hide boxes, bags, and bins of unneeded household items. What we don’t think of is innovation and entrepreneurship, yet in growing numbers, that’s exactly what you might find.

Self-Storage Benefits for Small Businesses

What attracts small business owners to self-storage spaces? For most it is simply a flexible way to store goods and materials until sold. For many business owners, self storage offers needed space without being tied down, giving them the opportunity to respond quickly to the changing needs of their business’. Storage space can easily be increased as the business grows, eliminating the headaches of being tied down to a retail or warehouse space with expensive multi year leases.

With this lower overhead, the small business owner has more money to invest in his goods and services, and in many cases the cost of  self-storage can even be deducted as a business expense. Most self storage facility today also offer the capacity to accept deliveries for the tenant, eliminating the need for a small business owner to wait around for a shipment to arrive.

Small business self storage

Greg Meckel, Owner of The Storage Inn self-storage in Egg Harbor Township and Ocean City New Jersey offers his thoughts on the subject: “Many of our commercial customers store with us because we accept deliveries on their behalf. We sign for and take the goods into the store while they are out and about running their business, thereby avoiding them wasting their time waiting for deliveries”.

The market for small business self-storage use has boomed dramatically over the last two decades. Savvy self-storage business owners have recognized the desire for affordable storage space, and have turned their attention to this lucrative pool of potential customers. Self Storage experts estimate that 30 – 40% of rented units are now for business purposes. Could a self-storage unit be the answer to your small business needs?

Green Self-Storage

Green Self-Storage

The visual Image generated by the thought of self-storage is usually that of identical buildings, with row upon row of identical garage doors. Pretty boring, right? But beneath that none-too-exciting exterior, storage facilities are the perfect testing grounds for new “green self-storage technologies”.

Egg Harbor Township self-storage rental

Green self-storage

Green, eco-friendly buildings can use one-third less energy than standard buildings, and self storage facilities are the perfect testing grounds for energy conservation. The typical self-storage configuration of flat roofed buildings makes the installation of solar panels a no brainer for the owner considering going green. Solar energy not only replaces the use of energy created by fossil fuels, but can also reduce energy costs to the facility, which could then be passed on to the consumer. A win/win for everyone involved!

Beyond green energy, storage facility owners are increasingly considering the wider environmental impacts of their businesses. Most have rules against storing any substance that, if allowed to spill or leak into storm drains, could pose a hazard to the environment. Many require tenants to use specified recycle areas for disposal of certain types of items or materials. Simple changes like the movement toward energy efficient lighting triggered by motion detectors can be a great, yet sometimes overlooked, energy saver. Greg Meckel, owner of The Storage Inn located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, spoke about green self-storage. “As a company, we strive to be more environmentally friendly everyday from our use of solar panels, to upgraded LED lighting and the use of organic cleaners.”

As many businesses continue to move toward more green practices and consumers show preference for more and more green products, storage facilities will undoubtedly continue to follow suit.

In addition to Egg Harbor Township The Storage Inn serves towns in the area such as Ocean City, Absecon, Atlantic City, Galloway, Pleasantville, Ventnor,Mays Landing, Somers Point and others.
